H&R Coilovers

    H&R Coilovers guide

H&R builds its coilovers on either monotube or twin-tube dampers. Most use the monotube design, in which a floating piston keeps the oil and the gas charge apart; the smaller twin-tube group has the working cylinder inside an outer reservoir tube. All of them are height-adjustable on a threaded body, and some of the twin-tube kits also adjust the damping.

Read the title closely before ordering, because many cars have more than one kit. Some differ by front axle load, with one version up to a stated weight and one above it. The permitted axle load is shown on the car’s VIN plate and in many registration documents. Others differ by front strut diameter, for example 48.5, 53 or 55 mm, or by two- and four-wheel drive. Nearly every kit is listed with a TÜV certificate.

Volkswagen and Audi hold the most kits, ahead of BMW, Seat and Skoda, then Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche, Renault and Mazda. Coverage reaches from the Golf IV and the first Leon to the current Golf VIII and A3 (8Y). Once the height is set, have the alignment checked with the driver’s weight in the car.
