22" guide
22-inch wheels are the largest size in this department, chosen mostly for large SUVs and luxury cars with arches built to take them. Every wheel here is a five-stud design from 9 J to 11.5 J wide, with listed weights of 15.8 to 19.6 kg and load ratings of 650 to 1030 kg.
Here the compromise is at its sharpest. Many of these wheels weigh around 19 kg before the tyre goes on, all of it unsprung and rotating. That mass adds work for the brakes and dampers, blunts acceleration and makes the suspension work harder to keep the tyre on the road over bumps.
The gain is space and proportion. A 22-inch barrel clears very large brakes, and a wide rim fills the arch of a big vehicle. On a heavy SUV, the wheel’s load rating and the tyre’s load index are the first figures to check, ahead of style.
Key specifications:
- Bolt pattern: 5×108, 5×112, 5×120 or 5×130.
- Width and offset: 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5 and 11.5 J, from ET 15 to ET 58. High offsets keep wide rims inside the arch, while low ones push the wheel out and change the scrub radius and steering feel.
- Centre bore: 66.5, 70, 71.6, 72.5, 82 or 84 mm, with a centring ring wherever the bore is larger than the hub.
- Load rating: mostly 850 to 1030 kg, with some at 650 or 740 kg that suit lighter vehicles only. Each wheel’s rating must reach at least half the permitted axle load.
- Finish: two-tone satin black/titanium, platinum/black and bronze/black, hyper black, black painted, flat black and high gloss silver.
Have the tyres fitted on equipment suited to large, low-profile assemblies, and balanced with the correct centring cone or a hub-centric adapter. Tighten in a cross pattern to the specified figure and check again after the first journey. Clean two-tone finishes with a pH-neutral cleaner, as strong acid or alkaline products can stain the lacquer.
