Water Temperature Gauges guide

A water temperature gauge shows coolant temperature, a direct sign of how well the cooling system is coping. This section holds 51 mm and 52 mm gauges with a 40–120 °C scale, including a version supplied with its sender, and an infrared thermometer for surface temperatures.

Pressure and antifreeze raise the coolant’s boiling point above that of plain water at atmospheric pressure. A 40–120 °C scale covers warm-up, the thermostat’s working band and the climb towards boiling. What matters most is your car’s normal reading, and how far and how fast it moves from there.

A sudden drop to cold on a hot engine is a warning, not relief. If coolant has been lost, the sender may sit in steam or air and read low while the engine overheats.

Choose by fit and use:

  • Size: 51 mm or 52 mm mounting, so check the panel hole or pod first.
  • Sender: a gauge supplied with its sender avoids a mismatched curve; otherwise use a 40–120 °C sender made for the gauge.
  • Infrared thermometer: for comparing radiator, hose and component temperatures. Shiny metal reflects heat and reads low, so aim at a painted or dull surface.

Fit the sender in the cylinder head outlet or the top hose near it, fully immersed in flowing coolant. Bleed the system so no air pocket forms at the tip. Note the normal readings on the road and on track, and set any warning a margin above the track figure, well short of boiling.
