    Gauges guide

Gauges put the engine’s vital readings in front of the driver, and a gauge is often the first place a developing fault shows. This section holds gauges for boost, exhaust temperature, transmission temperature, engine speed and road speed, including 52 mm and 85 mm sizes, plus a level sender and mounting parts.

Electric gauges read a sender or probe through a wire, which keeps oil, fuel and boost lines out of the cabin. Exhaust gas temperature is read by a thermocouple, which generates its own small voltage and copes with the heat of a 200–1200 °C scale. Transmission fluid ages quickly when it runs hot, and many factory dashes do not show its temperature.

The 85 mm rev counter reads to 10,000 rpm and counts engine hours, and the 85 mm speedometer reads to 300 km/h with a total distance counter. The tube-type level sender has a 260 mm installed length, a flange mount and a 0–90 Ω output, so it needs a gauge made for that resistance range.

Choose the scale for the job:

    • Boost: a 52 mm gauge reading to 30 psi, or an electric boost-only gauge reading to 4 bar. Pick the scale that covers the target with room left to show an overboost.
    • Exhaust temperature: 200–1200 °C, with the probe in the collector or just before the turbine.
    • Transmission temperature: a 0–280 °F scale, for automatic and sequential gearboxes that work hard.
    • Fuel level: measure the tank’s inside depth before choosing a tube sender, and match the gauge to its output.
    • Mounting: a 52 mm mounting cup and a triple gauge L-bracket.

Give each gauge a fused ignition feed and a clean ground, because a poor shared ground shifts every needle on it. Run sender wires away from ignition leads, and check each reading against a reference after fitting, since a new sender can differ from the old one.

Group the critical gauges where one glance takes them all in. Turn each so its normal reading points the same way, and an abnormal one stands out at once.
