Seat Mounts guide
Seat mounts connect a racing seat to the car, and in an impact they must hold the seat, with the person in it, in place. Here you will find brackets and mounting plates listed by car, universal side brackets, bolt-in and weld-in frame kits, and a sliding rail kit.
In a rear or side impact, the body is thrown into the backrest or bolsters with many times its own weight. The mounts must pass that load into the floor without bending. A bracket that yields lets the seat shift, which changes the belt geometry at the worst moment. Brackets also set the seat’s height, fore-and-aft position and back angle, so they shape the driving position as much as the seat does.
How to choose:
- Car-specific or universal: brackets and plates listed by car use its original seat mounting points. Universal brackets and frames suit custom installations, or cars with no listed bracket.
- Side: brackets come for the left side, the right side or as a pair, and plates for the driver’s or co-driver’s side, so match the listing to the seat position.
- Material: steel is strong for its size and can be welded; aluminium saves weight but deserves a check for cracks after hard use.
- Bolt-in or weld-in: a bolt-in frame kit can come out again, while a weld-in subframe becomes part of the floor or cage. Leave the welding to a qualified fabricator.
- Sliding rails: a rail kit lets the seat move fore and aft for different drivers, at the cost of some height and possible play.
Competition rules set the number of mounting points, the bolt size and the backing plates under the floor, so read your series’ current regulations before you drill. FIA rules also forbid anchoring a harness to the seat or its mounts, so plan the belt anchorages separately.
Fit high-tensile fasteners, lock every nut, and check them again once the car has done its first event. Brackets built for competition may need adjusting to sit square in a standard car. If the factory seats had side airbags or belt sensors, expect warning lights once they come out.
