Clutch Lines guide
A clutch line carries hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder at the pedal to the slave cylinder at the gearbox. The lines here include braided replacements for named models and lines for engine swaps, where the slave cylinder sits somewhere the original pipework cannot reach.
Pedal stroke reaches the slave cylinder as a small volume of fluid. A rubber hose swells slightly with each press, so part of that volume goes into stretching the hose rather than moving the slave piston. With a heavier pressure plate, line pressure rises and the effect grows: the pedal feels softer, the biting point wanders and the clutch may not release fully.
A braided line usually pairs a PTFE inner hose with a stainless steel outer braid that limits its expansion under pressure. The pedal feels firmer and the release point stays more consistent.
Check these points:
- Vehicle or swap: titles give the model, chassis code and years, or the swap the line is made for. Swap lines can also depend on the master cylinder fitted, so check the whole combination.
- Quantity: titles marked 1x supply a single line.
- End fittings: the thread and seat at each end must match the cylinder or hard pipe exactly. Never force a fitting that will not start by hand.
Use new sealing washers where the fitting needs them, and hold the hose so it does not twist as the union is tightened. Route the line clear of the exhaust, driveshafts and sharp edges, as the braid wears through anything it rubs against.
On many cars the clutch shares its fluid reservoir with the brakes, so use the fluid the vehicle maker specifies and bleed until no air remains. Inspect the line for chafing and weeping fittings at each service, and bleed fresh fluid through the clutch whenever the brake fluid is changed.
