Interior

The interior section covers what the driver holds and what holds the driver:

  • steering wheels, hubs and quick releases, and shift knobs;
  • bucket seats and seat mounts;
  • harnesses and seat belts;
  • race pedals and footrests;
  • window and safety nets, fire extinguishers, roll cage padding and interior mirrors.

Most of these parts form a chain, and each link has to match the next:

  • Seat: a bucket seat needs mounts or side brackets for the car, and a harness whose belts suit the seat’s harness slots.
  • Harness: it needs mounting points at the right angles, with the shoulder straps running close to level from the shoulders to their mount. Harnesses are listed with their homologation (for example FIA 8853-2016) or as non-FIA belts.
  • Steering wheel: it needs a hub made for the car’s column, and a quick release if you want to take the wheel off.

Choose the level of homologation for your use. Competition cars need FIA-listed seats, harnesses, nets and extinguishers within their validity dates. Track-day and road cars have more freedom, but the parts still need to be mounted properly.

Before ordering a seat, check the driving position it will give: the seat height, the reach to wheel and pedals and the view out. Mounting a seat and harness involves structural fixings, so follow the maker’s instructions for bolts and spreader plates, and have the installation checked if you are unsure.
