QSP Steering Wheels

QSP’s steering wheel listing covers the wheel itself and the parts that mount it. The sports wheels come in leather or suede, from 300 mm to 380 mm in diameter, flat or dished by 65, 70 or 90 mm. A smaller 285 mm Formula wheel in suede suits single-seater cockpits.

Diameter and dish are the choices that matter most. A smaller wheel needs more effort but less movement, and gives more room to get in and out; a larger one needs less effort, which helps in a car without power steering. Dish moves the rim towards the driver, so a deep-dished wheel suits a seat mounted further back, while a flat wheel suits a close driving position.

An aftermarket wheel mounts on a hub specific to the car, and QSP lists hubs for particular models, named in the title. Steering rings and horn buttons complete the centre, and steering bolts fix the wheel to the hub. Steering quickeners with 1:1.5 and 1:2 ratios reduce the turns from lock to lock.

On a road car, fitting an aftermarket wheel means removing the airbag, so the airbag circuit has to be dealt with as well.
