Chrome Air Filters guide

Chrome air filters are universal filters with a bright chrome finish. They suit an open engine bay or a carburettor installation where the filter is part of the look. Some are offered in several versions under one base part number, marked by the letters at the end of the code.

The chrome is cosmetic. Airflow and filtration depend on the media, its pleated area and the neck size, exactly as with any other universal filter. A chrome finish reflects some radiant heat, but the element still breathes the air around it, so its position sets the intake temperature.

When choosing:

  • Neck size: match it to the outside diameter of the pipe, carburettor or throttle body it will clamp onto.
  • Size and clearance: check the element’s length and diameter against the space to the bonnet, bodywork and hot parts, with room to reach the clip.
  • Version: compare listings that share a base number side by side, as their codes differ only in the suffix.
  • Air supply: plan a shield or a cool-air duct if the filter will sit near the exhaust or radiator.

Fit the filter to a clean pipe and tighten the clip evenly; a filter that works loose lets unfiltered air straight into the engine. Clean the chrome with a mild, non-abrasive polish and keep it off the media. Service the element according to its type: oiled media are washed and re-oiled, dry media are washed and left dry. Check the clip at every service, as heat cycles can ease its grip.
